Under the Sea Hosting
Mike deGruy was killed in a helicopter crash while filming a wildlife project in Australia on February 4th 2012.
An accomplished diver and underwater cinematographer, Mike deGruy has also become a go-to host and expedition member on shows like the recent Mysteries of the Shark Coast with Céline Cousteau and Richard Fitzpatrick. He is also one of the Discovery Channel’s most popular and highly rated presenters during the network’s renowned Shark Week– being a shark-attack survivor himself.
Mike was severely attacked by a shark while filming in the Marshall Islands. Eleven operations later, he got back into the water and developed a successful underwater career filming sharks and many other animals. But his first passion is cephalopods, and in fact DeGruy and his team were the first to film two rarely seen cephalopods, the Nautilus and the Vampire Squid, in their home ocean.
Mike deGruy has dived beneath both poles, visited the hydrothermal vents in both the Atlantic and the Pacific, become a submersible pilot, and had more meals on the Titanic, now resting at 12,500 feet deep, than did the doomed passengers. As you can imagine, he has collected many stories along the way.
For the last several years, in addition to filmmaking, Mike deGruy has become a speaker, master of ceremonies and interviewer/moderator for a wide range of audiences. He has interviewed James Cameron, Sir David Attenborough, Al Gore and many others on stage and brings decades of experience of world travel, interactions with media, broadcasters and foreign agencies, as well as hundreds of ocean stories and tales of creatures great and small, to entertain his audiences.
Trained in the operation of small submersibles, Mike deGruy has filmed at depths exceeding 10,000 feet and filmed many species never recorded in the wild before.
The recipient of many awards including BAFTA and EMMYs, Mike deGruy is still heavily involved in the wildlife filming community, hosting programs for the Discovery Channel, continuing with his underwater filming and sitting on three film boards in his home of Santa Barbara, California.
